The wait is over, tickets are now on sale for The Killuminati Foundation's annual Project Puppy Gala!

Here are the official details:

SPRINGFIELD, MO – the Killuminati Foundation’s Project Puppy tickets are NOW available online at www.projectpuppy.org through PayPal or at Flame & Flair Boutique at 1550 E. Battlefield. The Killuminati Foundation presents the 3rd Annual Project Puppy Gala on Oct. 1st at University Plaza. Project Puppy is the Killuminati Foundation’s largest fundraiser of the year. Killuminati takes a fundraising event to a whole new level with Project Puppy! This formal dinner, dance, and silent auction offers a twist on the traditional fundraising event by featuring rescued dogs strutting their stuff down the runway in custom designed outfits by Missouri State University fashion students. (All dogs in show are available for adoption.) Think Project Runway meets Killuminati!! Tickets are $35 per person or $300 for a table of ten. Limited seating available.

The Killuminati Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit that offers financial vet assistance for families with a dog suffering serious illness or ailment which they can’t afford. Individuals in Missouri can apply for aid, and KF will grant up to half of the total cost based on need and availability. Killuminati also works with the youth through educational programs to share the importance of responsible animal care. Events like Project Puppy play a huge role in how many dogs KF can save as we rely solely on donations and fundraising events.

Project Puppy sponsors: Camp Bow Wow, Galloway Village Veterinary, Midwest Family Marketing, and TAME Pet Magazine.

New Studio Offering- Photography classes!

UTurn Studios is now offering photography classes. We have several options to cover many aspects of photography at every learning level. Give us a call to reserve your spot or to learn more about the classes offered. You can read all about it here and keep an eye on our website for updates about class dates and new classes.

Here are the basics:

INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOGRAPHY

This class covers the basics of photography for the beginner. You’ll learn to use your camera to it’s full potential, and will understand the fundamentals of photography including exposure, composition and lighting. Only 10 students will be allowed into each session, so there will be plenty of time for hands-on work and questions. This class will be held in the studio at UTurn Studios, which will allow a great spot for learning indoor photography and 10 acres to roam while getting hands-on time with outdoor photography and lighting. This is a two-day class for a total of 8 hours of class time. The cost of the class is $125 per person, which includes the class, class materials and snacks & beverages for each day of class.

Next available class: September 9 & 10, 10am-2pm each day

INTERMEDIATE PHOTOGRAPHY

This class is designed for those who have a grasp on the basics of photography and are looking to take it a step farther. We’ll cover lighting, composition for different types of photography and will delve into some fun photo experiments. Class size will be small, with 10 students or less, so there will be plenty of time for questions and most of the class will be hands-on learning. The classes will be held in the studio at UTurn Studios, with time for both indoor and outdoor photo work. This is a two-day class for a total of 8 hours of class time. The cost of the class is $125 per person, which includes the class, class materials and snacks & beverages for each day of class. Students who have already completed the Introduction to Photography class will receive a $25 discount for the Intermediate class.

Next available class: October 7 & 8, 10am-2pm each day

TAILORED GROUP PHOTO LESSONS

This option is offered to any group of 5-20 people. You can choose from the following courses: - Photography Basics

- Outdoor/nature photography

- Studio photography

- Lighting for photography

- Q&A Session - anything goes*

- Portrait photography

- Still life/food photography

Choose one of the basic subjects for your group, then we’ll consult with you to tailor the class to your groups’ specific needs. Classes can be held at your location anywhere within 30 miles of Springfield, MO (classes are available outside this area with a small travel fee). Group organizer will receive free admission for any group of 10 or more, two free admissions for a group of 20. A four hour session is $100 per person, an additional hour may be added for $10 per person.

PRIVATE PHOTO LESSONS

Private photography sessions are also available. This session is a one-on-one that can cover nearly any photo topic you can dream up. Some common requests are:

- Business start-up consultation

- Portfolio review

- Basic to advanced photography instruction

- Studio photography

- Photography tips for travel photography, kids’ sporting events, scrapbooking

Private sessions can be held at UTurn Studios or at the location of your choice (within 30 miles of Springfield, MO; outside this area will incur a small travel fee). The fee for private lessons is $50 per hour, with a 2 hour minimum.

Meet the Instructor:

Hi! I’m April Turner, professional photographer and owner of UTurn Studios — and photography instructor for the classes offered by UTurn. My background is in graphic design, with 10+ years experience in graphics for companies such as Sunbeam, Tracker Marine and Fantastic Caverns. I began to learn photography while art directing photo shoots with some of the top photographers in the area. I transitioned to a photography career by shooting stock photography and then opening UTurn Studios. At UTurn, I offer pet photography as well as senior portrait photography. I have had the good fortune to work in many different realms of photography; including still life/food, portraiture, nature, weddings and photojournalism. I was bit by the teaching bug when I had the opportunity to teach photography classes at OTC in Springfield, where I taught for two years. I dearly love sharing my passion for photography with others and hope to do so through these classes. I hope you find a class to your liking, if not — drop me a line and let me know. I’m happy to consider any class suggestions.

NOTES:

*Please note that pet photography will not be covered or discussed in any photo class or private lesson. Pet photography consultation is available at the private photography lesson rate for students who are outside a 500 mile radius of Springfield, MO.

Minimum class size for Introduction & Intermediate class is 5 students. UTurn Studios reserves the right to cancel any class that does not fill. Payment will be refunded in the event that a class is cancelled.

A 50% deposit is required at time of booking for all classes & lessons, with the remaining 50% due on the first day of class. The deposit is non-refundable, unless the class is cancelled by UTurn Studios, at which time the amount paid will be refunded.

The UTurn Studios menu of packages and prints has been newly refreshed to include several photo collections along with a selection of new ways to display your favorite pet photos! This new menu will be released on July 1, with a facebook contest the following week for a chance to win a photo session and one of the new collections for you and your pet.

For customers that have already had their session but have not yet ordered, you can still order from the current price sheet until August 1 or you can choose to go with the new menu — whichever suits your needs the best. After August 1, all orders will use the new menu pricing. Feel free to cal or email with any questions and stay tuned to see the new offerings!

Indigo- Need help ASAP!

We need some help for Indigo! He is available for adoption through The Killuminati Foundation. He was recently adopted on a trial basis and it just didn't work out. He is a very sweet dog, medium size (25-30lbs), 1-2 years old. He is in immediate need of a foster family with no other pets, or with one other pet. Better yet, it would be wonderful to find a forever family for him. If anyone has any ideas for a foster home or forever family, please email UTurn Studios (april@uturnstudios.com) or The Killuminati Foundation (inspirelives@yahoo.com).

Princess- available for adoption!

Meet Princess, a gorgeous Weimaraner girl who is available for adoption through the Wonder Weims rescue. You can find them on facebook, or click here to contact them through their website. Princess has lived most of her life in a cage, and came into rescue with horrible skin problems. Her foster mom has done an amazing job with her and has her skin cleared up and she's quickly becoming a very loving and happy dog. I'm so glad I got to work with her and hope she finds the fabulous home she deserves!

This handsome Boxer boy is available for adoption through Boxer/Schnauzer Rescue of the Ozarks. His name is Prime, and he's such a wonderful dog. He was a delight to work with, as I think will show in the photos. He has a very loving personality, and is so calm yet playful all at once. Here are a few favorites from All Pet Supplies last weekend. What's coming up this weekend? Bark for Life, that's what! Bark for Life is part of Relay For Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Come out and browse exhibitor and vendor booths and enjoy a stroll with your dog on the Frisco Highline Trail. The event is from 8am til Noon this Saturday, May 1 at the Springfield Trailhead on the Frisco Highline Trail. While you're there, stop by our booth and say hello. We will be there taking photos, with proceeds going to Relay For Life. See you there!

Although Mother's Day is a couple of weeks away, it's time to think about it this weekend! This weekends' photo day at All Pet Supplies North will be the last photo event to still get your photos back in time to give to Mom for Mother's Day. Let's begin with one of my favorite canine customers, Greer. You may recognize her from the header of this blog, and also as the star of one of our flyers. Greer has been coming in since she was just a wee little thing, and now she's all grown up and adorable as ever.

Greer now has a spunky little sister named Lulu. These two are the best of friends

It just so happens that sweet little Lulu's birthday fell on our photo day! So her mom brought her cake and birthday hat for a few shots. Lulu was so adorable with her cake, she clearly loved it!

Here's another familiar face that you may remember, this is Captain. He is also the star of another one of our flyers. I just love Captain and the special bond that he and his Mom share.

Here are a few favorites from the photo event last weekend at All Breed Pet Grooming. Don't forget that tomorrow; Saturday, April 17, is our photo day at Pet Warehouse on Kearney. Looks like the weather is going to be beautiful so get out with your pooch (or other furry friend!) and come in for photos. We will be there from 10am 'til 6pm, and no appointment is needed. Let's begin with the shop kitty...a sweet, tiny little kitty girl named Mama. Mama wasn't really sure about having her photo taken...

But she quickly warmed up to the idea

And then we have this pair of Cairn Terriers, who really stole the show. I just loved these dogs, so smart and they have such adorable and expressive faces.

And finally we have this little lady. Senior dogs are so old and wise, I always feel honored to work with them.

Sometimes I get so busy that I forget to share some of my favorite shots with everyone. I just cant bear to keep all this cuteness under wraps, so I've decided to start a series of posts called "The Unblogged" - it will be photos that I have meant to share but gotten to busy to post them in a timely fashion. So they may have been taken a little while ago, but they're still great shots! I am excited to compile a post with some of my favorite shots from last year that I didn't get to blog...but for now here are a few from the past month or so that I haven't posted yet...

First we have the amazing Miss Ellie, she's a young Morkie who wears her hair in a Schnauzer type cut - too cute. Once again, we had a total blast at the FGVS photo day! This time around, we were there for Easter Pet Photos. The group of pets and their people that came in was so much fun and I heard a lot of funny and touching pet stories that day. Are you ready for extreme puppy cuteness overload? At our recent Photo Day at Preferred Pet Supply in Monett, the puppies really stole the show. We had puppies of all shapes and sizes, and it was so fun to capture their puppy cuteness before they are all grown up. Of course I enjoy photographing pets of all ages, but there's just something special about working with puppies. After all, they're only babies once! The inaugural "Killer K9's" Trail Race to benefit Boxer/Schnauzer Rescue of the Ozarks is coming up THIS SATURDAY, March 20. It will be held at Springfield's beautiful Sac River Trail. Registration is $10.00 per dog & handler team and all funds go to support BSRO. You can pre-register at Three Dog Bakery or Ultimate Pet in Springfield. We will be offering them tomorrow for $21 at All Pets. If you can't make it out for photos tomorrow, no worries. You can order them from any future photo session, or with a photo we have taken for you in the past. Stop by and check them out tomorrow if you have a spare moment, they're really cool! We will be at All Pet Supplies North tomorrow (Saturday, February 27) from 10am 'til 2pm, and as always, there's no appointment needed. In addition to the new playing cards we'll also have our regular packages priced at $25, $35 or $50 with no additional sitting fee. The backgrounds will be soft spring colors and a few fun patterns thrown in for good measure.

My kitty Ringo is a gorgeous cat. No really, he is. That is, unless you get the camera out. I know this about him, but stubbornly still try to capture him at his best. I needed a cat model for a project that I'm working on, so I decided to start with him. The results were just too funny not to share...so here he is, my gorgeous but somewhat challenged kitty...

And this is the look I get when he's really, really done with the camera being pointed at him...

But then, miraculously, he managed to redeem himself and look gorgeous again...

It's the Groundhog Mosey, a very unique opportunity to walk through Fantastic Caverns. We all know Fantastic Caverns as America's Only Ride-Through Cave, but now you have the unique opportunity to walk through, exploring and enjoying at your own pace. The best part, in my opinion, is that no matter how cold it is that day it will be a warm and cozy 60º inside the cave! We will be there taking photos, and for an addition donation to Relay For Life, you can even have your photo made with "Greta the Groundhog"!! OK, so I'm only 18 days late in wishing you all a Happy New Year...but HAPPY NEW YEAR!! nonetheless. I hope it is going well for everyone so far! My blog has been sorely neglected as I have been quite busy with some exciting plans and operations to improve and expand UTurn Studios in 2010! A thousand thank-yous to each and every one of our fabulous clients/friends who helped to make 2009 the best year ever at UTurn! Stay tuned for lots of updates and exciting announcements as we work to improve and add new offerings to make 2010 even better.

Our first photo event of 2010 will be coming up very shortly, on January 30 at All Pet Supplies North. Project Puppy

Project Puppy was a complete success! A great time was had by all, there was great doggie fashion, food, friends, dogs, door prizes and a Silent Auction with hundreds of awesome items. All of the dogs did a phenomenal job of strutting their stuff on the runway, and everyone seemed to enjoy playing with the pups afterward. Cowgirl the Ferret

This little cutie is Cowgirl, she's the beloved pet of my friend M. Aren't they so sweet together! M wasn't actually planning on being in the photos, but my lack of Ferret experience mandated it. We got some great shots, but there were also many shots where I clicked a split second too late and the shot was only of Cowgirl's tail while she skittered off the background. :) Cowgirl was most interested in hiding in my rolls of backgrounds behind the set. Thanks M & Cowgirl, I can now happily report that I will be better prepared for future Ferret clients.

Where have I been??

Whew, I didn't realize how long it has been since I posted on my blog! I have been staying very busy. Here are a few shots from some sessions I've had in the past couple of weeks:

High School Senior Portraits are what I've been the busiest with lately, it's almost time for the yearbook deadline for many local schools. Stephanie is one of my recent seniors, and she brought her cute and cuddly little guy Payton with her. Of course, he didn't mind to steal the spotlight for a few shots! :)

I have been lucky enough to photograph Paisley the beagle and her family for the last three years. They recently came out for their session and Paisley struck some adorable poses in exchange for some yummy treats.

Meet Chicki, I just adore this tiny one. She was rescued as a very small puppy, abandoned along a busy Springfield street. Her front legs are deformed, but it doesn't slow her down a bit! She zoomed all around my studio having a blast, and then was more than happy to settle down and pose on her "princess pillow". Chicki is so loving and has such a beautiful personality (and face!) What a doll.

Meet the lovely miss Cleo, a stunning white boxer with brilliant blue eyes. Cleo is available for adoption through Boxer/Schnauzer Rescue of the Ozarks. She is one of the cuddliest boxers that I have ever met, she snuggled up to me a just few minutes after I met her. I just absolutely adore this dog and hope that someone out there will give her all the love she deserves! This Saturday, June 13, we'll unveil a new pet portrait special at Bark In The Park!! We'll have a booth at this annual event in Springfield's Sequiota Park. Registration for the dog walk begins at 7:30 am, and the walk begins at 8:00 am. After you return from the walk, you can visit all of the booths and stick around for the kids' dog show! I know it will be a fun day, as always, and you won't want to miss out on our new special. We'll begin taking appointments for the special on Saturday, with a bonus if you book at Bark In The Park. UTurn Studios and The Pets Directory kicked off our first "P3" Pet Photo Event in Phelps Grove park yesterday. The rain held off for us and we had a blast. A few of the sweet fur babies we got to work with are below. The gardens at Phelps Grove are GORGEOUS and at their peak. What a great weekend! - All Pets & Arffest

It was a fun-filled weekend for pets around Springfield. On Saturday, our photo day at All Pet Supplies North was in full swing with lots of gorgeous furry faces. Then, on Sunday, Arffest descended on Commercial Street and fun was had by all. It was great weather and there were tons of wonderful doggies everywhere- what could be more fun?! Meet Daphne, a wonderful little spirit. She's up for adoption from the Killuminati Foundation. The last shot of Daphne is my favorite, look at those ears blowing in the breeze!

Two of my favorite pugs were in attendance, and they got to meet! I have a feeling these two would have a blast together.

The puppies Mom had the fabulous idea to do a shoot with a "puppies left home alone" theme that she could use in marketing her pet sitting services. We turned this pair of cuties loose on some shoes, a pillow and some bathroom tissue. Too fun! This is Dakota, dog model extraordinaire. His Mom brought him out for a modeling session a few weeks back and he did great job! He is such an adorable little guy, and he was just full of personality which I think really comes through in his photos. We had such a great assortment of pets, families and even a couple of adorable babies (of the human variety). Did you miss it?!? And, I've saved the best for last. This is perhaps the funniest picture I've ever taken. Ever. This gorgeous Dalmation puppy, Shelby, was terrified of Santa. Now that is something that VERY rarely happens, because Santa is amazing with the pets and has a huge pet-loving heart. Most dogs go straight for him, but not Shelby. Because it never happens, I was a little befuddled about what to do. I suggested that Shelby pose with her person, and we'd add Santa as a background element. As he was sneaking in between the trees, Shelby was onto my plan and this is the result... When I took the photo, I realized it would be hilarious, but not as hilarious as I found it upon closer inspection. Check out Shelby's face, she was yawning a nervous yawn but it looks like she is yelling for Santa to go away. Too funny!

Hayden, an adorable little english bulldog puppy, brought her Winnie the Pooh to be in a few shots with her. Her mom tells me that Pooh is Hayden's sleeping partner and constant companion. I like that it helps to show off just how small Hayden really is!

What a fun day it was at Jan's Grooming– we celebrated several different holidays! The photo day was a week or so before Halloween, so a few dogs brought in their Halloween costumes (who can resist a Boston dressed as Elvis– and a pug clown...too cute!). Others wanted to get a jump start on their Holiday photos for cards, and then a few wanted an "everyday" non-holiday shots. It certainly makes for a colorful blog post...

Murphy & Hoover

Meet Murphy and Hoover, a couple of great dogs. These boys are Wheaten Terriers and have very fun, energetic personalities. I have not had the opportunity to work with many Wheatens, as there just aren't that many in this area, but they were a blast and it was a fun challenge to find their eyes under that wonderful tuft of hair on their foreheads! On the day of our studio session, it was raining and we weren't able to shoot anything outdoors. Luckily we were able to meet back up at Nathaniel Greene Park a few days later– it's an absolutely gorgeous place to shoot. We even had some Canadian Geese make a guest appearance.

A sad day at UTurn Studios...

Today we lost the eldest member of our animal family. Our kitty Wyatt passed away quietly today after a brief illness. I can't begin to express how I am feeling right now, other than sad...but this does make me think of something I wanted to share with my friends and clients. When I made the decision to become a professional pet photographer, a major part of that decision was the loss of our first cat, Purpy. He was a beautiful Snowshoe Siamese, and he was always my favorite photo subject. When we lost him to cancer, I was thankful that I had so many photos to remember him by. I wanted to share that with everyone who has had their life touched by a furry friend. Which brings me to my point...while I never, ever mind to work with an ill pet, I want to strongly encourage you to get your photos done in the good times. So many people don't realize that they want photos until their pet is already sick, and by then the animal often feels bad enough that their true personality does not shine in the photos. I want to provide you with photos that you will be able to treasure and remember your pet by for a lifetime, and the best way to do that is to photograph a happy, healthy pet. Here's one of my favorite photos that I have of Wyatt. He was a very regal, "king of the realm" kind of kitty and I think this shows that pretty well.

Foggy Fall Morning

I love Fall. Although Spring is hard to beat... Fall is probably my favorite time to take outdoor photos. It's starting to cool off, and the leaves are just beginning to show a little color. For those of you who were waiting for some Fall color before booking your outdoor portraits, now's the time! I have a (very) few openings left before the leaves start to fall, so give me a call if you'd like an Autumn session. No post is complete without a photo...so I'll share a few fun ones I took with my dogs over the weekend. When I went to take them for their morning walk on Sunday, I noticed the sunrise shining through the thinning fog....so of course I had to grab the camera and make the pooches pose!!

Dog Fest - only two days away!!

One of Springfield's best dog-related events of the year is coming up this Saturday, September 27. This is one you don't want to miss, there's FREE admission, the Dachshund Dash, a silent auction with wonderful items, and TONS of dog-related vendors to visit with. It all takes place from 10am to 2:30 pm at the Chesterfield Family Center Park. This is such a fun event, and best of all, it benefits the Cruse Dog Park project. While you're there, stop by the UTurn Studios booth. We'll be handing out our popular "doggie takeout boxes" to the first 100 visitors to our booth, and make sure to bid on our silent auction item. It's a photo session worth $185! The weather forecast for Saturday is beautiful, so it's a great time to take Fido for an outing. Hope to see you all there!

Captain is one of my favorite dogs of all time. He has been coming in yearly for birthday pics...he's now three years old and as amazing as ever. If any dog could talk, it would be Captain. Just look at all the expressions he makes...a pet photographer's dream dog! :-)

A new addition to the UTurn Studios Family!

I am proud to introduce a new member of our little animal family! Last week we brought home Ringo, an adorable Bengal kitten. He's 5 months old, and is providing constant entertainment for us. Of course, he has already been photographed as much in the last week as most cats are in an entire lifetime! Here are a few of my favorite shots so far...

This little kitty LOVES his toys. Probably more than any cat I have ever met. He really gets into his playtime and keeps us in stitches. I would've had more playtime shots to share, if I wasn't laughing too hard to get them in focus!

Ringo is very laid back when he's not in playtime mode. He loves to sleep flat on his back, completely sprawled out. He goes completely limp when he's like this, so much so that if he falls asleep in your lap you have to be careful that he doesn't slide off. His favorite place seems to be the funky aqua and olive green retro chair in my office, which makes for a great photo op since it matches his eyes.
